Last October, Rachel had more than just her gorgeous wedding to be thankful for, she was also celebrating the return of the love of her life from overseas duty. This New Jersey photographer’s groom-to-be came home a few months earlier and she now found herself a military wife. After months of planning sans groom, 30 of Rachel and Matt’s closest friends and family joined them in Montego Bay, Jamaica for a dream destination wedding.

For many good reasons and the unfortunate idea that a Trash the Dress shoot, really does not mean its going in the Trash Can. In all actuality, a simple dry cleaning is all it will need. I digress!

5 Important Questions for Your Destination Wedding Photographer

I came across a great article written by a destination bride and she has some wonderful insights that any destination bride should consider when looking for a photographer. The direct link to her article is below but first here are her 5 questions and my answers to these questions. I hope you enjoy the article!

1. Can I choose from more than one photographer? Some firms offer multiple photographers. Sometimes these "other" photographers are simply interns or learning the ropes. In fact, if you do NOT specifically ask for the main photographer, you very well may not be getting that person. At August T Photography, you get me, August, and only me. Well, you may request a second shooter but they will be just that.

2. Does the photographer shoot film or digital? There are a few photographers that are holding onto film. I learned on film over 20 years ago and I love working with film, but I have to be honest with you, there really is nothing like what I can do wtih digital compared to film. I could probably write you a novel of what advantages there are to digital. So, long story short, I will be shooting digital.

3. What do you want to have photographed? There are a few things I go over with every bride. First, I would love to have an engagement session with you and your fiance. This allows us to get to know each other as well as see my work first hand. Second, I email a list of the top 85 shots most brides are looking for at their weddings. I encourage each bride to add to or take from this list and email it back to me. I also encourage each bride to keep her eye out for shots she would like and email them to me or even create an album on Facebook. This helps me to be as prepared as possible. Finally, I set a time to go over all of this information about one week prior to the wedding. Again, to be as prepared as possible.

4. How long will the session be? I have been hired for some shorter weddings and inevitably I am asked to stay longer. To make sure each bride has a sufficient amount of coverage on her wedding day all of my packages include a full 8 hours of coverage. The only exception to this rule is weekday weddings. One other nice option is that I include an engagement session with every wedding package. Win-Win for everyone!

5. Can I schedule a phone call with the photographer prior to my wedding? I almost can NOT believe this question exists. I am planning on talking to you, meeting you, talking to you again, going over the contract, asking tons of questions about how you met, what your wedding plans are, what type of photos you are looking for and the list goes on. It is actually very rare that we do not become pretty good friends. Well, at least well aquainted prior to your wedding. You will have my personal cell phone number and email address and you will be told to email or call anytime you feel the need!

Project Wedding has a great article I came across regarding your photographer for a destination wedding. Many resorts offer a local photographer and often it is a much cheaper option than flying in a photographer, however, it really does have its drawbacks.

"The advantage to flying in photographer talent is that you'll be able to meet with him or her before your wedding and spend more significant time going over desired shots and wedding day details. Interview potential photographers about their location familiarity. A seasoned destination photographer will know how to adapt to a destination locale and what to look for in capturing your wedding."

Another great point is the potential flexibility for your photographer to offer some extended coverage.

"A destination wedding is often extended into a weekend or weeklong celebration. Many couples want their photographer to capture the rehearsal dinner and day-after brunch; others will hire a photographer to shoot a week of wedding-related events. Consider how much of your destination wedding you want immortalized in photos and book your destination-wedding photographer accordingly."

Planning Tips for the Perfect Honeymoon

I just came across a great article on Planning Tips for the Perfect Honeymoon. I thought it would make a great addition to my blog.

Now if you are thinking about honeymooning in Myrtle Beach, then I have a few things I would like to add. First, some of the top things you should see while you are here.
There is nowhere to swim with the dolphins here, but there are tours that guarantee to see dolphins. Everybody loves dolphins!

There is a very relaxing and romantic place to visit and its called Brookgreen Gardens. I liken it to an Alice and Wonderland feel. It has 300 year old oak trees, statues and water fountains galore and just a beautiful place to visit. It is also somewhere you can literally spend the entire day and possibly not see it all. A nice picnic... champagne and strawberries...

If you like alligators -

Alligator Adventure!

If you like baby tigers in our lap - TIGERS Preservation Station
If you like mini golf there are enough here to play one a day for several months!
If you like restuarants - there are over 3,000 in the area
If you like golf - there are almost as many courses in the area

And the last thing on my list which should probably be first is a romantic sunset photo session
with yours truly. I know of a perfect stretch of 3 miles of totally untouched beach front that makes for some of the most romantic photography to commemerate your new bond as one!

As a wedding photographer, and seeing the behind the scenes of a plethora of weddings, I can tell you that no matter how much planning you do, things can go wrong. Some of the most organized brides I have seen have still forgot something.

Destination weddings can be a lot of fun, but there are some logistical concerns one must consider when planning a wedding far from home. When I met the Harris' for their family beach photography session, it was a pretty hot day. Around the Atalaya Castle, there was little to no wind and it was sweltering. When we got down onto the beach, it was a whole different story.

It's always nice to have a challenge of families of 15 or 19, but then it is also really nice to have a family of 3 where when you ask for a smile you get simply that, a smile. It never ceases to amaze me how different it is working with each family I meet here in Myrtle Beach.

The summer is coming to an end and so will my chaotic schedule. In someway I am going to miss it. In others, I am ready for a bit of a break from 105 degree heat indexes...

In other posts I talk about referrals and how people come to find me for their photography services. From out in the mid west a family found out their beaches in the gulf were getting tar balls. They rescheduled to Myrtle Beach, looked my up on Yahoo Local. We met and had a wonderful session. In fact some of the photos from the Olroyd Family were just precious moments I caught.

The Olroyds recommended Myrtle Beach and your truly... How humbling to have 2 families as friends from out in the middle of the US coming to see me in the same summer!

Oh, mom and dad, really love each other and wanted a few couple shots. We did have one of the most spectacular sunsets going on... Ramsey's Wedding - What a great show of LOVE!

One of my first weddings this year was with a couple named Spike and Tasha. I met the lady handling the video and she works with a guy, who is Ramsey's new husband. So through the grapevine we talked, met for an engagement session and then I was hired to be their wedding photographer.

It is always pretty cool to find out how people come to know about me and my photography business and this was certainly a great chain of events.

Now, this wedding was in a really cool looking timber framed church in Pawleys Island. I really loved the setting of this church and absolutely loved this stained glass window up in the balcony. Gulf Oil Spill Helping This Photographer

You know I never thought much about it, until I heard that Myrtle Beach has had some tourism increases due to the oil hitting some beaches in the Gulf. I really wondered how much that would help my business given that I am taking family beach photos here in the Myrtle Beach area.

Guess what? It was 2 weeks ago, when a call came in, it was a mom worried that her call was too last minute. I happened to have an opening and alls well that ends well.

During that photo shoot I was just being me, chit chatting, asking questions and they mentioned their vacation was scheduled for the Gulf this summer. Their particular location had some oil on the beaches so the rescheduled for Myrtle Beach. Looked on Yahoo Local for a photographer and that's where they found me.

So, the gulf oil spill has not been a black gold mine for me, but I can certainly say I have at least on customer that I did not have because of it. I think it is pretty interesting how all of these things come about.

Our Ad in the Grand Strand Bride Magazine

It's interesting to me how you develop friendships and working relationships with customers. I responded to an ad on Craigslist for folks looking for a wedding photographer. I replied and low and behold, we met to do an engagement shoot. It was a pretty chilly day, but they were SOLD on my photography. Heck I was even pretty impressed with some of the shots we got that day.

Just an FYI, I am building to a specific series of points.

When talking with this couple I find that he does a lot of work with web design and knows quite a bit about photoshop. At their wedding there is a woman there who is in dance classes with this couple and she is handling the video for the wedding. She turns out to be impressed enough with my work that she refers me to a friends, brother who is getting married. I do an engagement shoot with this new couple and get hired for their wedding.

Now, in and among all of this I take a leap of faith and offer my services for free for this cooking show called Taste!. At this show I meet a woman whom is later going to end up working with me in a sales and marketing capacity because she really likes me as a person and LOVES my photography. This woman happens to be best friends with the mother of the gentleman whom I referred to in the beginning that does web design.

I have some younger friends back north who were going to handle my ad for the Grand Strand Bridal Magazine and through circumstances, time lines were not met and I called upon this web design gentleman. The ad you are going to see below is his work. His name is Spike Cohen and even though he did not design my current website, I am looking for him to do some serious redesign on my site. He did a PHENOMENAL job on my ad and I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for graphic design or web related work done!

In closing, I have to say that I am not a photographer because it was some career path I stumbled into as a youngster. Its not as if life developed and somehow I am stuck doing something...

I am a photographer because I have an artistic background, was HUGELY fortunate enough to be exposed to a photography program while I was in high school. Over the last 20 years I have had a pretty nice camera and I took photos here and there for friends and family, weddings and senior portraits. Its now, over 20 years later that I have taken an honest evaluation of my life and decided to do something I REALLY LOVE doing.

When I spend 3-4-5 sometimes 6 hours out in the HOT, the HUMID, covered in SAND (and sand in places it shouldn't be), getting into the air conditioned car... and just about falling asleep on my way home. I still CAN'T wait to dig into the photos from that day. I know I have captured some really cool and sometimes even GREAT moments in these peoples lives. I not only want to see them but share them with these families and the world.

Thank you when you call and book me as your photographer. It humbles me ever single time. I never take it for granted!!!

Sex and the "City Bar"

So, this wonderful woman Paige Oakley-Anderson, decided to have a Sex and the "City Bar" party to raise money for a local breast cancer organization. There were 4 limos and about 50 ladies. They all met at the City Bar in Myrtle Beach, had a few Sex and the City cocktails, then headed off the the premier of Sex and the City. As they exited the limo's there was a full band playing. The manager of the movie theater, met them all and escorted the ladies to their own private theater for the movie. After the movie, there are these 4 stretched limos parked out front. As the ladies are coming out and mingling before getting back into the limos, there was a real buzz in the air. As the photographer I was asked, "Are they famous?" "Are they actresses?" "Are they from New York?" It was a fun time I am sure!

One of the limo drivers even mentioned that an evening like this, is what everyone thinks a limo ride should be like. So, hats off to Paige for organizing this event. Hats off to all of the lovely ladies who came out to support this event.

Back at the City Bar were tickets being bought for all of the wonderful items being raffled off that night. There were Sex and the City posters, gift certificates from my photography business, August T. Michel Photography, as well as Party Maker, Bi-Lo Shopping Center, JPH Retreats, Party Gals by Lisa, Palm Shoe Collections and Carolina Limousine.

Trashing the Wedding Dress

OK, some ladies reading this will at first, "OH MY!! it's your wedding dress!!" I agree! However, some ladies say, "I am honestly never going to wear this dress again. Why NOT.. Trash the Dress?" Again, I agree! ;)

This is where each bride needs to realize that trashing the dress can be from one extreme to the other. A gentle walk through the surf all the way to lighting it on fire.

As your photographer I am going to really leave this 110% up to the bride. How adventurous do you want to be. As your photographer I am not looking to destroy your dress. I am looking to capture some unique images that you will NEVER forget. They will also be some of the more unique photos from anytime in your life.

Sex in the City Bar to raise money for Breast Cancer

I have a friend, Paige Anderson, who is hosting this party and has asked me to handle the photography for the event. They are meeting at the City Bar in Myrtle Beach at 6pm, taking limo's to the premier of Sex and the City.

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – A Myrtle Beach-area bar hopes a party based off of a popular television series and movie will help raise funds to fight back against breast cancer.

City Bar Metropolitan Cuisine has planned its "Sex & the City Bar Party" for May 27 in honor of the movie premiere of Sex & the City 2.

Slated to begin at 6 p.m., City Bar will feature cocktail specials named in honor of the "Sex & the City" characters throughout the evening. Exactly 100 percent of the sale proceeds from the "Samantha" cocktail will be donated to Caring in Our Lifetime.

In addition to cocktail specials, City Bar will be accepting donations on behalf of the organization. Event prizes include Divine Dining Group gift certificates, JPH Retreats massage gift certificates, books, wine, photography and movie posters.

For more than 10 years, Caring in Our Lifetime has worked to assist breast cancer patients in paying their medical bills and educating women on the symptoms of the deadly disease.

Erica's Wedding

She is from Brazil, he is in the Air Force... Her parents do not speak any English, his grandmother is from the Atlantic Beach, NC area... and that is how it all comes to be. Erica and I met, I think on Myspace as I was putting out comments regarding my photography business. She fell in love with my work and I am glad she did.

She was a little worried about the 30% chance of thunderstorms but the day turned out wonderfully! I have just a few photos ready for this blog, but I am sure there are going to be a few hundred really great shots, so make sure you stop back to check them out!!!

Brittney and Adam's Wedding

I have to say that this was a beautiful wedding. The reception location was this really grand county club setting. The wedding was held out on a huge deck overlooking a lake.
