Eleanor and Erik's Wedding

Sunday, May 2, 2010 was surely a great day for Eleanor and Erik.

They had a small backyard wedding, and were blessed with not only beautiful weather
but wonderful family and friends in attendance. After the wedding the reception was held at the "City Bar" where everyone seemed to have a great time! Even though I was
requested to be their photographer last minute, I would not have had it any other way!

Thanks Eleanor for the wonderful compliments!!! I hope you enjoy the photos as much as I enjoyed taking them!!!

Thanks,
August

New!
Wedding Photography: 9 Hot Wedding Photo Trends (the link to this article on the Knot.com is at the end...)

Here's the latest in wedding photography and how to make it work for you.

A wedding photo is meant to preserve your fabulous day for the rest of your life -- it's not just your new profile pic on Facebook after all! But nuptial shots can look stiff and boring if you're not careful -- or worse, just like everyone else's. How can you make them unique? Here are new wedding photography ideas that'll take you from pre- to post- "I do."
Before the Reception...

1. Become the Center of Attention
Instead of flowers, fill photo cubes with different shots from your dating history or world travels and then use them as table centerpieces. It's a great conversation-starter and a nice way for guests to learn more about the early stages of your relationship. And unlike fresh blooms, you can decorate your home with these afterward.

2. Be the Favors
Have your photo imprinted on cookies and leave one at each place setting. Opt for a black-and-white, vintage-looking image so it doesn't come out cheesy. Wrap the cookie in wax paper and tie with a ribbon. Then let wedding guests eat their hearts out -- and your faces off!

3. Head to the City
Engagement cityscape shoots are popular because of the iconic quality of posing by recognizable landmarks. No skyline? Shooting against an urban brick wall can convey the same message. Use your favorite image in your save-the-dates or, for instant reception decor, blow up one of the pictures, mat it, and set it on an easel near the escort cards. Display other shots in your table cards.

When Will We Take Them? The Golden Hour

The Golden Hour refers to the hour before sunset and after sunrise, the first and last hour of sunlight in the day.

The Golden Hour is sometimes called the Magic Hour. And, no wonder. This time of day is simply magical.

It is almost universally agreed among photographers that these are the very best hours of the day to take photos because of the special character and quality of light.
Dramatic changes in light

During the Golden Hours, the atmosphere is often permeated with breathtaking light that adds ambiance, interest and drama to any scene. There can be spectacular variations of colors and hues ranging from subtle to dramatic during the Golden Hours.

Even simple subjects take on an added glow.

And remember, during this time we must take photos when the opportunity presents itself because the lighting changes quickly and then fades away so be ready!

Also, some people prefer not to take beach portraits when its cloudy, however honestly sometimes it is the best time! Clouds on the beach are often referred to as God’s natural softbox because they diffuse that powerful sunlight and make skin glow and, of course, its easier not to squint! The colors of the water and sky can sometimes be just as beautiful in the clouds than when the sun is out!
What to Wear?

People often ask me what to wear for their beach shoots and I usually say whatever makes you feel like you look the best! White and khaki aren’t mandatory at all! In fact, if you have a bright bold shirt that you think makes your eyes shine then by all means please wear it-you photography better when you feel your best. And you can always wear neutral bottoms and changes your shirts-just put a tank on under it for easy changing. But, if you are looking for some suggestions, here are some recommendations on some more traditional dress for beach portraits:

Beach Casual
1. Wear a beach casual style for your next beach portrait. Beach casual is khaki shorts, capris, skirts or pants. Your top should be light in color with no patterns like flowers or stripes. If the beach portrait will include more than one person then you should coordinate on the color of your blouses and shirts. It is a good idea to wear the same colors because this will bring more focus to the faces in your beach portrait. Beach casual also means minimal jewelry and bare feet. If the weather is cooler, then long sleeves and pants are okay. Women need to think about their hair style too. Beach weather can sometimes get breezy. Plan ahead wearing a hairstyle that is suitable for windy weather.
The Blues
2. Blue is the perfect color for beach portrait outfits. Any shades of blue will go well with the surrounding scenery, making your beach portrait that much more harmonious. Blues come in different shades, so if taking family or group portraits, try to coordinate your blue colors. Stonewashed denim shirts are a popular choice for beach portraits. Wear blue jean shorts or pants. Keep your feet bare and your jewelry selection minimal.
Classic Whites
3. Wear a crisp white shirt at your beach portrait session. The white colors of your shirt will put the emphasis on the people in the portrait and not the clothes. Button-down shirts, polo shirts and even plain white t-shirts will add an ethereal quality to your portrait. However, not everyone has to wear the same style shirt. You could let everyone’s personality shine through with their white shirt choice. Add to the simplicity and drama of your portrait by wearing white pants, shorts and skirts, too

Hair/Makeup:
Even if you don’t normally sport makeup please make sure you have some color on your cheeks and lips-depending upon the day sometimes no color can make you look washed out so, even if its light, it will look more natural. Also, as you know, sometimes the beach can be windy so make sure to go out and see just how windy it is – if the wind is up you might consider styling your hair a different way so it won’t be in your face the entire time. Certainly we can remove stray hairs from those prized favorites but if you get too much it just doesn’t edit out very naturally!

Hiring Wedding Professionals Really Pays Off!

Although this article is about hiring professionals for your wedding, I want to talk briefly about a recent wedding I did.

Tiffany and Ken were getting married and they were having literally just themselves at the wedding. Well other than me and the officiant. It made me think that if you were to boil down the professional list, the wedding photographer is still left.

I know in this economy purse strings are tighter. Just consider some of the information I found in the following article entitled, Hiring Professionals Pays Off.

Thanks,
August

Hiring Professionals Pays Off

By Jan Brenner & Jennifer Ahearn

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if weddings just planned themselves and automatically included everything you ever wanted? You’d simply say “yes” to that designer gown you covet, the 300-person guest list, the six-course dinner with endless champagne, the hot band you just saw on YouTube and all the other deliciously pricey items on your wish list. That pesky word “budget” would not even be in your vocabulary.
articles_altToo bad fairy godmothers are so hard to come by. More than likely, you’re stuck without a wand, and the gap between your dreams and your budget is widening by the hour.
Saving Money Can Cost You

So what do you do when your bank account can’t accommodate your wedding fantasy? The natural inclination is to cut corners wherever you can. Sometimes it’s enough just to pare down your guest list or switch from a formal seated dinner to an hors d’oeuvres reception. But more often than not, you assume that staying within your budget means cutting back completely on professional services. You have a running conversation with yourself: Do I really need to hire a coordinator? Nope, I can probably manage this shindig by myself…and if I have Uncle Bob take the photos, that’ll save me a chunk of change…and while I’m at it, I can do without a DJ—my brother has an incredible CD collection and he can bring his sound system… articles_alt

Yes, you will save money by hiring the least expensive vendors you can find, doing things yourself or delegating your wedding services to relatives and friends. But the old adage, “You get what you pay for,” really comes into play here. Skimp on services and you could easily end up paying a big price anyway: lots of headaches and a wedding that’s memorable for all the wrong reasons.

How To Take Unique And Creative Engagement Photos -- Ideas, Tips And Examples

I have to say that choosing your wedding photographer is one of the more important aspects of planning your wedding. It may seem that
I am biased being a photographer, but I have done my fair share of research so I can be the best prepared photographer you have
ever met. I have read hundreds of articles, looked over hundreds of photographers websites, scoured through all sorts of
wedding sites like www.theknot.com to see what the brides are thinking. Should you choose to do this much research, I am more than
confident you will come to the same conclusion.

If you think about it, its the ONE thing that is timeless. You may remember your DJ, probably not so much. You may remember the
officiant mispronounce your last name (actually happened to me - gotta love the last name Michel - looks like Michael or Mitchel but rhymes with nickel and pickle).
You may remember how beautiful the flowers were... but HOW? Through your photographs. If you attended 1,000 weddings this year,
how many do you think will have a photographer? How many will have a videographer? How about a DJ?

Ok, I think I have made my point. To this end, I personally love to meet a couple for an engagement photo session. This offers
some very important quality time. We see how we interact with each other. We see most importantly, the results of my photography
with YOU in the photos. There is nothing like seeing yourself in the actual photos. Sure, I could have hundreds of great photos
on my site of other couples, but I am telling you, its a powerful sales tool for me, when you see my work first hand.

So, if this helps me to "sell" you, then it should also lend as a great tool for you to decide if a photographer is worth it or not.
They may have great photos, but what if they are "NOT SO" personable or "bossy" or just flat out "rude". Do you really want to
find this out on your wedding day? I would venture to say, "not so much!"

So, now we are full circle. Why an engagement photo session is a really good idea.

Now, I would be remiss if I did not add my additional 2 cents about the money aspect of this transaction. I have offered "free" engagement
photo sessions. Many of them cancel last minute or for some reason forget. Do you have any idea how frustrating this is?
Especially, when the time is booked on my calendar and I can't book anything else there to potentially make a living. So, should
we, as professional photographers charge for an engagement photo session? I think we should. However, I think we should keep the
price as reasonable as possible and I also think this should be deducted from the wedding package, should you choose to book me
as your wedding photographer.

I have seen many offer super inexpensive packages and then charge 200-300-400 dollars for an engagement session on top of their
wedding package. I really do NOT like this approach. What I also do not like is a bride who wants a discount from our wedding
package if they choose to NOT have an engagement photo session. Maybe I should not put this in writing for the world to see, but
I am being real. I recently met a couple for a typical engagement photo session. It was in a nice park called Brookgreen Gardens.
I also brought my girlfriends daughter with me. It is $12 for me to get in and $6 for her. The drive was about 45 minutes each way
and with a Ford Explorer, the gas was around the $10 mark. After a couple of hours taking photos I bought a soda for the 2 of us, $2 and on the
way home we stopped for Taco Bell. It is like one of these "priceless" commercials that list out the costs, but the experience is
"priceless". I love having her with me but let us look at this from a business owner point of view. This cost me around $40
and I spent around 3-4 hours of my time and this is before I even get to downloading and editing the photos. Imagine your boss
sending you on an errand for the afternoon and the errand cost you $40 of your money. Wouldn't you expect your boss to cover this?
Sure you would. What about your TIME? Should your boss pay you for taking the TIME to run these errands for he/she? I bet you would expect them to.

How many engagement photo sessions can one afford to embark on for FREE before they run out of time and money. Even if they book the weddings most of the time, the cost for the wedding
is to cover the time spent on the wedding day (and depending on your package - the editing). So, I share all of this to simply say, I think
you should find a photographer who is not so in a rush to offer you too many things for FREE. How can the afford to do this? I also think, you
should find a photographer that is willing to charge you a fair going rate (maybe a slight discount), but surely discounts the
engagement session if you book the wedding with them. Doesn't that seem pretty fair?

Below, I found this article on some tips for taking great engagement photos. I hope you like it!

Thanks,
August

How To Take Unique And Creative Engagement Photos -- Ideas, Tips And Examples

By Hup Challenge

Why Take Engagement Photos?

If you are engaged or getting ready to be engaged, you should prepare yourself for all of the things that you now are 'supposed' to do now that you are on a direct path for marriage. One of these things that will most likely come up quickly is getting your engagement photos taken. Engagement photos might not seem like that big of deal, but after going through this entire engagement picture-taking process I now realize that some of the decisions that were made before we even took a single shot were some of the most important ones that were made.

Whether you realize this yet or not, your engagement photos are going to be more important than you probably realize and thinking through the process will help you end up with pictures that best reflect both the couple and their love for one another. Also, the pictures that you get taken during your engagement photo shoot most likely aren't going to be cheap and they are going to be used in other things such as your save the date mailing, wedding program, guest book and reception decoration so you need to make sure that you have your stuff together before you're standing there in front of the camera,

The rest of this guide will help you make some of these important decisions once you get ready to have your engagement photos taken so that you'll end up with the type of creative and unique pictures that will reflect the awesome relationship that you have with your future husband or wife.

Be sure to find a photographer that really fits your style as a couple.

Finding A Photographer That Fits Your Style

One of the most important things that I have learned now that I have had my unique engagement photos taken is that you need to find a photographer that fits your style. I really can't stress this enough. There are a lot of photographers out there that tend to forget that this is your wedding and not just another addition to their portfolio, so as you begin to look for photographers for your engagement photos please try to find one that you know will match your personality as a couple and who will really listen to your thoughts and ideas.
